What is SILENT HILL: Townfall?

Simon Ordell is called back to the island of St. Amelia to put things right, and finds a town lying quiet beneath a heavy fog — seemingly abandoned, but not at rest. Venturing deeper with a handheld CRTV that reveals what the eye cannot, he pieces together fragments of a past rising back to the surface.

It is the newest entry in Konami's Silent Hill series, developed by Screen Burn and published by Konami and Annapurna Interactive, with writer and director Jon McKellan leading the project. Critics were convinced when the review embargo lifted on September 21, 2026: Metacritic's Metascore sits at 81, with the PS5 and PC averages landing within a point of each other. On PlayStation 5 and PC (Steam and Epic), Townfall blends stealth, exploration, puzzle-solving and tense horror encounters.

Townfall FAQ

Is Silent Hill: Townfall out yet?

Deluxe Edition owners are playing already. 48-hour Advanced Access opened on September 22, 2026, and the standard global unlock lands on September 24, 2026 — 04:00 UTC on PC and midnight local time on PS5.

Is Townfall coming to Xbox or Switch?

No. There is no Xbox or Switch version and none has been announced: Konami's official preorder page lists only PS5, Steam and Epic, and gaming outlets report the game as a timed PS5 and PC exclusive. Checked September 23, 2026.

Who makes Townfall — No Code or Screen Burn?

The credited developer is Screen Burn, the studio led by writer and director Jon McKellan. No Code revealed the game together with Konami in 2022, but 2026 official credits and the Steam listing name Screen Burn.

Do I need to play other Silent Hill games first?

No. Townfall is a self-contained story set in its own town and cast, so it works as a starting point for the series.

Is there a Silent Hill: Townfall demo?

No. The Steam store page carries no demo and Konami has not announced one — a gameplay video released before launch is not a playable demo. Checked September 23, 2026.

Editions, pre-order bonuses and the Day One disc

There are exactly two editions of SILENT HILL: Townfall, and Konami has confirmed that there is no Collector's Edition.

EditionPrice (US)What is in itPhysical?
Standard Edition$49.99The full gameYes — PS5 disc, sold as "Day One Edition"
Digital Deluxe Edition$59.99The full game; Bonus Application (digital artbook + digital soundtrack); Simon's Outfit: Alternate; 48-hour Advanced AccessNo — digital only

Elsewhere in the world the same two editions are listed at €49.99 / £44.99 (Standard) and €59.99 / £49.99 (Deluxe) in Europe, and ¥7,480 / ¥8,580 in Japan. Those regional figures come from a long-running Silent Hill fan archive and should be treated as a guide, not as a quote — the store page in your own region is the number that binds you. (Checked September 23, 2026.)

Pre-order bonuses. Konami's own copy on the Steam store page splits it cleanly:

  • Every pre-order — CRTV Style: Rusted, a cosmetic that changes how Simon's handheld CRTV looks.
  • PlayStation 5 pre-orders — the same Rusted style plus CRTV Style: Beach Edition, which is PS5-exclusive.
  • Digital Deluxe pre-orders — both CRTV styles where applicable, plus the 48-hour Advanced Access window described below.

The Deluxe Edition's "Bonus Application" is the container for the digital artbook and the digital soundtrack. Konami's own footnote is worth repeating because it surprises people: those extras are accessed through the application and cannot be downloaded out of it in a format of your choosing.

Pre-ordering has a deadline and it is now. Pre-orders close when the game unlocks on September 24, 2026 — the current pre-order window is the last one. After that, the same two editions remain on sale, but the pre-order cosmetics stop being bundled.

Steelbook. There is no Steelbook edition of the game. What exists is a retailer-exclusive physical bonus: certain European and Middle East retailers offered a Steelbook case with pre-orders of the physical PS5 Day One Edition. Reported retailers at the time of writing were Amazon UK, Micromania/Zing (France), Gamelife (Italy), MediaMarktSaturn (Germany), GAME (Spain) and ZGames (GCC). Stock at each of those retailers has not been individually re-checked — treat the list as a starting point and confirm with the retailer before ordering. Pending verification

Day One Edition. "Day One Edition" is not a third edition with extra content. It is the name of the physical PS5 release: the Standard game on disc, with the pre-order cosmetics and any retailer-exclusive physical bonus attached. In the US it is listed at $49.94 on Amazon with the same September 24, 2026 release date, i.e. within a few cents of the $49.99 digital price. If you specifically want a disc, that is the one to buy; if you want the 48-hour head start, you cannot get it on disc — Advanced Access is digital-only.

Critic scores: what the reviews actually say

The review embargo for SILENT HILL: Townfall lifted on September 21, 2026. Three days later the aggregate picture is settled but not frozen.

← Swipe wide tables to compare all columns →

AggregatorScoreReviews countedVerdict labelChecked
Metacritic — PlayStation 58168 critic reviewsGenerally Favorable2026-09-23
Metacritic — PC8230 critic reviewsGenerally Favorable2026-09-23
OpenCritic — Top Critic Average81.661 reviews (35 top-critic), median 84"Strong"2026-09-23

Two things to hold on to. First, user scores are not open yet on Metacritic — the page still shows no user score, so any "player rating" you see quoted is not from there. Second, the review counts are still climbing: Metacritic's PS5 count moved from 65 to 68 and PC from 29 to 30 between September 22 and 23. A score quoted without a date is a score you cannot trust.

The pattern in the individual reviews is consistent. What reviewers reward is atmosphere, art direction and puzzle design; what they fault is combat feel and monster design. Radio Times gave it 100 and called it "a stunning spin-off for the series… expanding your ideas of what exactly a Silent Hill experience can be". GamingTrend gave it 90: "Screen Burn proves once again what experts they are at masterful storytelling." Press Start Australia (85) put the split most cleanly: "Its monster designs and scares disappoint, but strong combat, excellent puzzles and a well-written story make up for those shortcomings." At the lower end, Metro GameCentral (70) wrote that it "doesn't move the series forward in any meaningful way, but this is still a highly effective survival horror", and Cultura Geek (60) found the combat "an obstacle to fully enjoying the story".

Bottom line for a buyer: this is a generally favourable, mid-80s horror game with an unusually strong critical ceiling and a real floor. If you come for the puzzles, the fog and the analogue-horror craft, the reviews are on your side. If combat and creature design are what you buy Silent Hill for, the reviews are more mixed than the score suggests.

Trophies and achievements

Both platform lists contain 36 entries with identical names, plus a Platinum trophy on PS5:

← Swipe wide tables to compare all columns →

PlatformTotalBreakdownPlatinum
PlayStation 5365 Gold · 9 Silver · 22 BronzeYes
Steam36 achievementsSame names and descriptions as the PS5 listn/a

The 36 split across four groups. Story (9) unlock automatically, e.g. Welcome To St. Amelia, The Patient, Eraser. Endings (5) require different conclusions: For St. Amelia (Justice), Here To Stay (Forever), Just Making Things Worse (Abandoned), Let's Talk This Out (Dog) and Sci-fi-lent Hill (Sci-fi) — so a full completion needs at least five playthroughs, or New Game Plus, which has its own trophy (Reliving A Nightmare). Difficulty and collectibles (8) include Fleeting Visit (finish in under four hours), Thorough Inspection (all documents), Blur Your Eyes (all strange postcards), Sweeping Signals (every CRTV signal) and Future Hardware (the Pistol-3000). Missable (14) is where the awkward ones live: Reject The Help requires that, after meeting Richard, you never use a phone to save; Save It For The Patients requires you to finish the missions "Rounds" and "The Patient" without using a healing item; Creative Process wants a kill with each of plank, pipe, pistol, shotgun, flare gun, bottle and brick in one playthrough.

One caveat about the Steam side. Steam's store page advertises "Steam Achievements" as a feature, and third-party trackers list all 36 — but Steam's own public store API still exposes no achievement list, checked September 23, 2026. That means the achievements exist in the client but are not exposed through the public data endpoint we can verify. Listed as unverified against Steam's own data: the achievement names are taken from a third-party aggregator and match the PS5 trophy list exactly, which is strong but not first-party evidence.

Trophy and achievement data is third-party compiled. Trigger conditions are current as of the launch build; patches can change them.

Is Townfall "in" Silent Hill? Do you need the older games?

Short answer: it is a Silent Hill game, but it does not take place in the town of Silent Hill, and you do not need to have played any of the others.

Annapurna Interactive and Screen Burn both describe it in identical official wording: "SILENT HILL: Townfall is a full-length, self-contained psychological horror set against the cold, isolated backdrop of Scotland, 1996." The setting is St. Amelia, a fictional Scottish island community — not the American town of Silent Hill, and not the 1960s Japan of Silent Hill f. Protagonist Simon Ordell is an American who washes ashore there and is trying to "put things right".

"Self-contained" is doing real work in that sentence. There is no prior-game save import, no returning protagonist and no announced continuity requirement. The shared vocabulary you will recognise is the series' grammar rather than its plot: fog, a radio-analogue device, a town with something wrong underneath it, and multiple endings. If you have never played a Silent Hill game, this is an intentional entry point rather than a test.

Two adjacent releases are worth telling apart so you do not buy the wrong one: Silent Hill f (set in 1960s Japan) and the Silent Hill 2 remake are separate games by different studios. Townfall is the one from Screen Burn.

The Dock House: the official prequel comic, not a game chapter

"The Dock House" is not a downloadable episode, a DLC chapter or an in-game area you unlock. It is an official prequel comic story, announced by Konami on September 10, 2026:

  • Full title: SILENT HILL: Townfall – The Dock House.
  • Written by Jon McKellan, the game's lead writer and director, with art by David Roach (Nemesis The Warlock).
  • Published by 2000 AD as part of the anthology's milestone issue Prog 2500: digitally on September 16, 2026, physical copies in North America on September 30, 2026, with print distribution through Lunar Distribution and digital copies via the 2000 AD Webstore and app.
  • It follows Douglas, a veteran harbourmaster who has spent decades maintaining St. Amelia's dock house, and who finds an impossible staircase descending beneath the harbour.
  • Konami describes it as "an official narrative companion" that gives "an additional perspective on the isolated island community of St. Amelia… while preserving the mysteries awaiting players in the game".

In other words: if you want more of the town before or alongside the game, this is the official source, and it is a comic. The physical issue's North American street date of September 30 falls after the game's own release, so the digital Prog 2500 is the way to read it first.

Who makes Townfall — and why you have seen the name "No Code"

The credited developer is Screen Burn, a studio in Glasgow, Scotland. The names that matter:

The "No Code" question, answered. When SILENT HILL: Townfall was revealed in 2022, it was attached to No Code, the studio behind Observation (2019) and Stories Untold (2017). In 2026 every official credit names Screen Burn. These are the same people, not a studio swap: IGN's hands-on preview states plainly that "Silent Hill: Townfall is developed by Screen Burn, which was previously known as NoCode", and the studio's own site still carries "No Code Ltd, Glasgow, Scotland" in its footer beneath the Screen Burn trademark. Screen Burn's developer video for the game walks through the same lineage and lists Super Arc Light (2016), Stories Untold (2017) and Observation (2019) before "and then SILENT HILL".

There is also a real lineage worth knowing if the game's feel appeals to you: Jon McKellan worked on Alien: Isolation and directed its DLC, and that first-person, under-armed, hide-before-you-fight tension is the acknowledged ancestor of Townfall's approach.

In the studio's own words, the project came together the other way round from how these usually do: after Observation shipped, Annapurna called to ask what Screen Burn would do with Silent Hill; the studio pitched; Konami liked it.

Is there a Silent Hill: Townfall demo?

No. There is no playable demo, and none has been announced. Checked September 23, 2026.

The evidence is direct rather than second-hand: Steam's store data for the game carries no demo entry at all, and no demo has been announced on Konami's official site, its official pre-order page or its official social channels.

The thing that keeps being mistaken for a demo is a 19-minute gameplay trailer published on August 20, 2026. It is a video of someone playing, not a build you can download — a distinction worth being blunt about, because "gameplay demo video" is how it was widely described.

If a demo is ever released, the thing that would change is the Steam store data itself: a demo creates a demo entry on the app. Until that appears, "no demo" is the answer.
